Australia has some pretty amazing birds; the
swans are black instead of white, cassowaries are up to two
metres tall and can kill a horse, Jesus birds that walk on water,
little birds that laugh like demented old witches, and the emu,
which recently was declared the world's dumbest bird in a bird-IQ
test by a Canadian scientist.

Black swans

The Dutch explorer Dirk Hartog landed on the west
coast in 1688 but was far from impressed and wrote in his journal;
"This land is cursed; the animals hop, not run. Birds run,
not fly. And the swans are black not white". Nobody knew
there were black swans until they found them in Australia.

Cassowary

Hideaway B&B, Cape Tribulation, N.Qld.
Australia's most spectacular bird would have to
be the cassowary, up to two metres tall, covered in coarse black
double stranded feathers, and with brilliant colors of red and
blue on its neck and head. This elusive flightless bird is highly
endangered and lives only in the Wet Tropics area of North Queensland
and another patch of remote rainforest high up on the Cape York
peninsula.
The cassowary (Casuarius casuarius johnsonii) has been wandering
around this planet since before the super continent Gondwana broke
up....Read more....
They can also be quite territorial, read
more on cassowary attacks...
